King Charles Faces Setback as Australian Republic Movement Pushes for End of Monarchy

Monarch’s Upcoming Australia Tour Dubbed ‘Farewell’ Amid Growing Republican Sentiment

Just days before King Charles embarks on his historic tour to Australia, his reign faces a significant challenge as leaders of the Australian Republic Movement (ARM) call for the country to become a republic. The monarch, while maintaining his "deep love and affection" for Australia, has stated that he would not interfere if the public chose to replace him as head of state.

Esther Anatolitis, co-chairwoman of the ARM, posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) proclaiming that this upcoming visit will likely be King Charles' last as Australia’s head of state. In her message, she questioned the relevance of a monarchy in modern Australia, asking, "Does it make sense that our head of state inherits the role by birthright and isn't here for Australians full time?"

Despite the growing republican sentiment, Philip Benwell, chairman of the pro-royal Australian Monarchist League, defended King Charles, calling the ARM’s remarks "disrespectful," especially given the King’s ongoing battle with cancer.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are scheduled to begin their tour of Australia and Samoa on October 18, 2024, a visit now clouded by debates over the monarchy's future in the country.
