Monarch Respects Australia’s Right to Decide on Its Future as a Republic
Just ahead of his highly anticipated tour of Australia, King Charles has addressed the ongoing debate over the country’s future as a monarchy. According to reports, the monarch has made it clear that he will not stand in the way if Australians choose to replace him as their head of state.
Buckingham Palace shared the King’s response to the Australian Republic Movement (ARM) after they requested a meeting during his visit. Through his assistant private secretary, Dr Nathan Ross, the King conveyed his "deep love and affection" for Australia and noted that whether the country becomes a republic is a decision for the Australian public.
ARM, while praising the royal family’s contribution, emphasised their desire for Australia to stand "on an equal footing with other nations," showing that the movement, though respectful, remains firm in its campaign for change.
