Monarch Adjusts Public Engagements and Pauses Treatment for Upcoming Tour
Next week, King Charles and Queen Camilla will embark on a significant visit to Australia, marking Charles' first official trip as king and his first major international tour since his cancer diagnosis earlier this year.
Their itinerary includes stops in Sydney and Canberra, followed by travel to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Traditional royal tour elements, such as wreath-laying ceremonies and visits to iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, have been carefully planned.
However, in a culturally sensitive move, the Palace has opted to change the terminology used during public engagements. The term “walkabout,” popularised by Queen Elizabeth II, will not be used in deference to Australia’s Aboriginal communities, for whom the word holds deep cultural significance. Instead, these events will be referred to as "opportunities to meet the public."
In addition, King Charles, now 75, will temporarily pause his cancer treatment for the duration of the tour. Having received weekly treatments since his diagnosis in February, he has been given medical approval to take an 11-day break, resuming his care upon his return. The adjustment underscores the King’s dedication to both his health and his royal responsibilities.
