Duke of York's defiance strains relationship with King as eviction dispute escalates
Prince Andrew continues to face fallout from his infamous Newsnight interview, with new revelations indicating that his refusal to heed critical advice played a major role in his downfall. Paul Tweed, a close friend, has suggested that Buckingham Palace and his legal team failed him, but journalist Lee Cohen points to Andrew’s own decision to ignore sound counsel as the root cause.
According to Cohen, Andrew was "strongly advised" against the interview but chose to disregard the guidance of those more familiar with media dynamics. This misstep culminated in a disastrous on-air performance, further damaging his public image.
Andrew’s controversial ties to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, as well as allegations of sexual misconduct brought by Virginia Giuffre, have significantly tarnished his reputation. After settling the case with Giuffre without an admission of guilt, Andrew was stripped of his royal titles and patronages in 2019.
Adding to the tension, Andrew is now in a dispute with his brother, King Charles. The Duke of York has resisted eviction from his 30-bedroom Royal Lodge in favour of moving to Frogmore Cottage, further straining relations within the royal family.
