Close friend questions Buckingham Palace’s silence over career-damaging TV appearance
Prince Andrew's infamous Newsnight interview continues to raise eyebrows as his close friend, Paul Tweed, a prominent lawyer, has voiced concerns about Buckingham Palace’s handling of the situation. In his new book, From Holywood to Hollywood: My Life as an International Libel Lawyer to the Rich and Famous, Tweed questions why the Palace remained silent and seemingly allowed the Duke of York to proceed with the controversial interview regarding his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Tweed, who has close connections with the York family, revealed that several of Andrew’s inner circle, including his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, supported the decision for him to sit down for the now widely criticised interview. Reflecting on the disastrous outcome, Tweed commented, "Hindsight is a wonderful thing," but suggested that even if Andrew had ignored advice, Buckingham Palace should have intervened more firmly.
He emphasised that allowing Andrew to undergo an intense, unrestricted cross-examination by a seasoned interviewer, who would have been well-prepared for the conversation, was a grave miscalculation. "It could not possibly offer any upside in any circumstance to anyone," Tweed noted.
The Palace has yet to comment on these claims, leaving questions about its role in what has been considered a career-ending move for the Duke.
