Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Reflect on Halloween Memories, From Private Milestones to Family Traditions

Halloween has become a special holiday for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, marked by memories both bittersweet and joyful.

Since the early days of their relationship, Halloween has held a cherished place in the lives of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The couple’s first Halloween together in 2016, shared with Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, became a turning point. Attending a costume party in Toronto, they received a “devastating” call that news of their relationship would be made public the next day, ending their brief period of privacy.

In the biography Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand describe how Harry and Meghan spent the evening of October 29 at a themed party at Soho House, celebrating their budding romance. They were “madly in love” and eager to join the festivities. But partway through the evening, a call from one of Harry’s aides shattered the moment, revealing that a newspaper had uncovered their relationship.

Harry also reflects on the incident in his memoir, Spare, recalling the feeling of inevitability when they received the news. “Well, we said, staring anxiously at our phones, it was going to happen eventually,” he writes, adding that they’d been tipped off about a potential media leak, which he humorously dubbed the “Halloween Apocalypse.”

Despite that night’s outcome, Halloween remains a joyful holiday for the couple, now celebrated with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. During a 2021 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Meghan shared how Archie dressed as a dinosaur—though he wore the costume for just a few minutes—and Lilibet charmed everyone as a little skunk, “like Flower from Bambi,” she said with a smile.

While their early Halloween memories carry a mix of emotions, the Sussexes continue to enjoy the holiday, creating new traditions and fun moments with their young family.
