Memoir Spare Escalates Strained Relations, Casting Doubts on Reconciliation Prospects
Prince Harry's strained relationship with Queen Camilla has reportedly worsened following the release of his memoir Spare in January 2023, further intensifying longstanding tensions within the Royal Family. The book, which includes pointed criticism of several senior royals, casts Camilla in a particularly negative light, reviving unresolved issues and widening the rift.
In Spare, Harry depicts his stepmother as a "wicked stepmother" and makes other disparaging remarks, which appear to have deepened the divide between them. The fallout has extended to his relationship with his brother, Prince William, with reports suggesting that the two are no longer on speaking terms.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has noted that the memoir’s unflattering portrayal of the family has caused significant unease, especially towards Harry and Meghan. "It [Spare] has heightened distrust within the family," Fitzwilliams stated, adding that the rift with William now seems "deeper and possibly irreparable."
King Charles was reportedly so upset by the book's attacks on Camilla that he chose to evict the Sussexes from Frogmore Cottage. "It confirmed the belief within the family that both he and Meghan were untrustworthy," Fitzwilliams claimed.
In the wake of these revelations, Queen Camilla is said to be staunchly opposed to any plans to reconnect with Harry. According to a source, "Camilla is against the idea of Harry making any sort of return, even for a friendly visit." She allegedly views him as a "wolf in sheep's clothing," fearing that his presence could bring "stress and drama" to the family.
The insider added that Camilla believes even brief contact between Harry and King Charles could negatively impact the King’s health, suggesting that Harry would be wise to avoid her if he were to visit the UK.
As tensions remain high, the possibility of reconciliation appears increasingly remote, with Spare serving as a flashpoint that has deepened the divisions within the Royal Family.
