Prince Harry's Song Request for Diana’s Memorial Denied Due to 'Macabre' Concerns

Elton John Opted for a Lighter Tune at Memorial, Citing Sensitivity

In his memoir Spare, Harry recalls requesting Elton John to perform Candle in the Wind at a memorial marking the anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. However, Elton, a close friend of Diana, chose instead to sing Your Song, believing the former was too "macabre" for the occasion, according to Mirror.

Your Song was a fitting alternative, as Elton had reimagined Candle in the Wind in 1997 to honour Diana after her untimely passing, performing it at her funeral. The song’s proceeds benefitted her charities, and since then, Elton has remained a steadfast supporter of Diana’s children. He has frequently defended both Harry and Meghan Markle, even providing them with private travel, while addressing concerns over carbon emissions.

Harry reflected that his mother would have been saddened by the rift between him and his brother, William, highlighting the enduring bond between Elton and Diana’s family as they continue to honour her legacy with care.
