Prince William Suggested Small Church for Harry and Meghan’s Wedding

Disagreements over wedding venue revealed as Harry and Meghan's grand ceremony unfolds at Windsor

The lavish 2018 wedding of Harry and Meghan Markle at St George's Chapel, Windsor, may have delighted millions worldwide, but behind the scenes, it reportedly caused tension within the Royal Family over the choice of venue.

According to Harry's memoir Spare, his brother, Prince William, wasn’t enthusiastic about the idea of a grand ceremony. When Harry proposed Westminster Abbey, William dismissed it, remarking that it was the site of his own wedding to Catherine. Harry then suggested St Paul's Cathedral, but William again turned it down, calling it "too grand."

In a surprising move, William suggested a small church in Tetbury, near their father's Highgrove estate, which Harry found amusing given its modest size. The Duke of Sussex revealed that he and Meghan initially dreamt of a more intimate ceremony, even fantasizing about eloping barefoot in Botswana. However, they eventually accepted the public nature of their roles and shared their special day with the world at Windsor.

Despite these initial disagreements, the couple’s wedding became a spectacular event, attended by 800 guests and watched by millions globally.
