Royal Family Reveals Duchess Sophie’s New Role in Malta Visit

Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh embark on a special tour to celebrate Malta’s independence and shared history with the UK

Buckingham Palace has officially confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are undertaking a key royal duty, marking an important milestone in their public service.

Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie are traveling to Malta to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the country's independence and celebrate the enduring bond between Malta and the UK. The royal couple will engage in several significant events during their visit from Monday to Thursday.

Upon their arrival in Valetta, Edward and Sophie will meet with Malta’s President Myriam Spiteri Debono and Prime Minister Dr Robert Abela. Throughout their stay, they will pay tribute to Malta’s role in World War II by visiting historical sites, including a newly dedicated monument honoring submariners. A wreath-laying ceremony at sea with the Armed Forces of Malta will further commemorate lives lost during the conflict.

The couple will also visit the Malta Maritime Museum, where they will interact with Armed Forces personnel and members of the Maltese-UK Veterans' Association. The visit will culminate in their attendance at The King’s Birthday Reception, hosted by the British High Commissioner, where they will meet young leaders shaping Malta's future.

This tour marks their first visit to Malta since 2012, when they visited as the Earl and Countess of Wessex, and the first royal visit since 2018.
