Princess of Wales Sets High Standards by Balancing Tradition with Personal Expression
Known for her understanding of royal traditions, Kate Middleton set a high standard early on by allowing the Palace to guide an important decision for her iconic 2011 wedding to Prince William. Style expert Miranda Holder shared that Kate’s main wedding gown, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, was a purposeful choice, symbolising a blend of craftsmanship, tradition, and respect for royal heritage. Although the dress was funded by her parents, it became a significant part of the Palace’s public image strategy, serving as both a family heirloom and a political statement.
Holder noted that the royal wedding gown often reflects the institution's larger vision, while Kate’s second wedding look offered her a chance for personal expression. For the private evening celebration, she opted for a simpler yet elegant Alexander McQueen dress paired with a “very pretty” cardigan, allowing her to relax and showcase her personal style before a smaller audience of 300.
“The second look gives brides like Kate a moment to fully express who they are,” Holder explained, noting that it provides a way to feel comfortable and true to themselves after the formalities.
