Former royal chef shares delightful details about the Queen’s favourite indulgences.
Queen Elizabeth II’s love for chocolate was more than a preference—it was a defining feature of her culinary tastes, according to her former chef Darren McGrady.
In an interview with Hello! magazine, McGrady, who served the Royal Family for 15 years, described the late monarch as an unabashed "chocoholic." Among her most cherished desserts was the chocolate biscuit cake, a treat that held a special place in her heart.
"The chocolate biscuit cake is different," McGrady explained. "She’d have a small slice, and the rest was carefully stored to be served again and again until it was completely finished. It was definitely her favourite cake."
The Queen’s fondness for chocolate wasn’t limited to this iconic cake. Another favourite was chocolate perfection pie, which often graced the royal table.
In addition to her chocolate indulgences, the Queen’s daily afternoon tea included a variety of cakes like lemon and ginger, alongside traditional sandwiches such as smoked salmon or cucumber—always served crustless, of course.
McGrady summed it up best: "She is absolutely a chocoholic," cementing chocolate as an enduring part of Queen Elizabeth’s legacy.
