Duke and Duchess of Sussex Could Complicate William’s Vision for Monarchy, Warns Historian
Prince William has been advised to tread carefully amid speculation that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might seek to "regroup" with the royal family, potentially disrupting the Prince of Wales's plans for a more low-key, philanthropic approach to his future reign.
The warning comes shortly after William shared his vision for a modernised monarchy, focusing less on grandeur and more on impactful charitable projects. Meanwhile, King Charles recently hosted a reception for the UK film and TV industry at Buckingham Palace, followed by a solo appearance at the glamorous premiere of Gladiator II.
Royal historian Dr. Tessa Dunlop expressed concerns over the royal family's absence from high-profile events, suggesting that the lack of visible royal presence could create an opening for the Sussexes to step back into the spotlight. "The King looked inescapably alone on the red carpet in Leicester Square," Dunlop noted, pointing out the absence of Queen Camilla, who is recovering from illness, and the usual fanfare seen at events like the No Time to Die premiere.
Dunlop highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong public image, warning that a vacuum at the top could invite "unwanted intruders," hinting at the potential return of Harry and Meghan. She added, "The royal family might think they’re above glitzy appearances, but that would be a mistake. With the Duke and Duchess of Sussex waiting in the wings, it’s crucial for William to stay vigilant."
While praising William’s efforts to redefine royalty with a smaller, more philanthropic focus, the historian cautioned that the Sussexes’ return could disrupt his vision and complicate the dynamics within the Firm.
