Sussexes Face Challenges as Netflix Deal Nears End Amid Limited Success
Despite maintaining a strong bond with Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s connections within the royal family are unlikely to sway Netflix’s decision about renewing their multimillion-dollar contract, according to royal commentators.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed the lucrative deal in 2020 after stepping back as senior royals, launching their debut series Harry & Meghan, which became a record-breaking hit. However, their subsequent project, Heart of Invictus, released in August 2023, failed to replicate the same impact, raising questions about the longevity of their partnership with Netflix.
Their next project, POLO, scheduled for release on December 10, is not anticipated to generate the same buzz as their first venture. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams suggested on GB News that the couple’s strained ties with senior royals and limited compelling content might influence Netflix’s decision not to renew the deal.
“Consider their position,” Fitzwilliams said. “They only get on with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, Princess Eugenie, and perhaps Princess Beatrice. It does not look well if they continue to monetise royal connections without fresh, impactful content.”
The absence of Harry and Meghan from POLO’s official trailer also sparked speculation, although a statement acknowledged their roles as executive producers.
With their contract set to expire next year, the future of their partnership with Netflix remains uncertain. For the Sussexes, the renewal of the deal is pivotal, but the outcome appears increasingly tenuous.
