Meghan Markle Faces Criticism for Prince Harry’s Long-Held Desire to Leave Royal Life

Duchess of Sussex Blamed for Decision That Predated Their Relationship

Prince Harry’s choice to step back from royal duties in 2020, often attributed to Meghan Markle’s influence, may have deeper roots, according to a royal expert. Harry had expressed a desire to leave royal life as early as 2015, years before meeting Meghan, suggesting the decision was his long-standing aspiration.

Royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills recalled a private conversation with Harry during a trip to New Zealand, where he candidly admitted his wish to “move away” but felt obligated to support the Queen. “Whenever anyone says it was Meghan’s fault they left, I remember that conversation,” Mills shared. “Harry always had it in him—Meghan just held his hand and jumped with him.”

Despite this context, Meghan has borne much of the blame for their departure, particularly after her explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. Critics have suggested she orchestrated their exit, leading to widespread scrutiny and allegations that she “wounded” the monarchy.

Adding to speculation, Meghan and Harry are scheduled for separate engagements next week. Meghan will attend a star-studded Hollywood event with her close friend Tyler Perry, while Harry participates in The New York Times DealBook Conference in New York.

These appearances come as the German documentary Harry – The Lost Prince prepares to air, promising to explore their decision to step back from royal life in greater detail.

The narrative of Harry’s independence challenges the perception of Meghan as the sole driver of their departure, highlighting their decision as a shared leap, rooted in Harry’s long-held desire for freedom from royal constraints.
