Storm Delays Prevented Harry from Being with Family Before News Went Public
Prince Harry reportedly urged Buckingham Palace to postpone the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II’s death so he could be present with the Royal Family when the news was made public, according to claims in Omid Scobie’s book Endgame.
The late Queen’s death was officially announced at 6:30 p.m. on September 8, 2022. However, Scobie alleges the announcement was initially scheduled earlier, with Harry requesting a delay to allow him time to arrive at Balmoral.
Despite the Palace reportedly agreeing to wait, stormy weather delayed Harry’s flight, forcing the plane to circle the airport before landing. Upon touchdown, Harry received a text from Meghan Markle urging him to call her immediately, followed by a breaking news alert from the BBC announcing the Queen’s passing.
A spokesperson for King Charles later clarified, “The public was only informed after every family member had been updated.” A source also noted that Charles was “adamant” all members of the Royal Family be informed before the news was released.
Harry had cancelled a scheduled appearance at a charity event in London to travel to Balmoral, hoping to be with his grandmother during her final moments.
In the days following the Queen’s passing, Harry and Prince William, joined by Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, made a rare joint appearance outside Windsor Castle to view floral tributes, marking their first public outing together since the Platinum Jubilee thanksgiving service in June 2022.
This emotional chapter highlights the complexities of royal dynamics during a time of profound loss and transition, with Harry’s efforts underscoring his enduring connection to his family despite ongoing tensions.
