Critics slam Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Netflix series as a vanity project
Harry and Meghan Markle’s latest Netflix project, a polo-themed documentary titled Polo, has ridden straight into controversy, drawing sharp criticism from Royal commentators and insiders.
As part of their £80 million deal with the streaming platform, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex executive-produced the series, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the elite sport closely associated with Harry. However, the reception has been far from regal.
Royal expert Rupert Bell labelled the series a “polo reality show” rather than a serious exploration of the sport, accusing it of prioritising personal vanity over meaningful content.
“It’s being laughed at by members of the elite polo community,” Bell told Talk TV. “The focus seems to be more on ego than the sport itself.”
Critics have also pointed out that the featured players, while skilled, do not represent the pinnacle of the polo world, further diminishing the documentary’s credibility.
“It’s a tough sport, but the content doesn’t meet the standards of elite polo,” Bell added.
The documentary’s lukewarm reception adds to the ongoing scrutiny of Harry and Meghan’s ventures under their high-profile Netflix deal.
