Meghan faces fresh royal setback as Sophie's prominence grows within the monarchy.
Meghan Markle has reportedly been dealt another setback from Buckingham Palace as Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh solidifies her elevated position within the royal family.
Before Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties in 2020, Sophie, then the Countess of Wessex, was obligated to curtsy to Meghan due to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s higher-ranking titles. However, following Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back, the dynamics shifted, bringing relief to Sophie.
In 2023, King Charles awarded Sophie and Prince Edward the prestigious titles of Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, further cementing their roles within the monarchy. According to the Mail, Sophie no longer feels the need to bow to a family member who has distanced themselves from royal duties and been critical of the institution.
“Sophie is relieved. She no longer has to curtsy to someone in the family who has not only left royal duties but spent the past three years criticising the institution that Sophie works so hard to support,” a source claimed.
Insiders have also noted that Sophie and Edward faced challenges gaining recognition within the royal family, particularly when overshadowed by Harry and Meghan’s prominence. However, with Prince William reportedly planning significant responsibilities for the Edinburghs in the future, Sophie’s role appears poised to expand.
This shift highlights the growing prominence of the Duchess of Edinburgh and underscores Meghan’s waning influence within royal circles. As William’s plans for the Edinburghs take shape, Sophie’s dedication and rising status stand in stark contrast to Meghan’s estranged relationship with the monarchy.
