The Waleses Ban Use of “Kid” to Promote Respect for Their Children
Kate Middleton and Prince William, despite their royal obligations, maintain a hands-on approach to raising their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—while upholding a distinctive rule in their household.
The Prince and Princess of Wales employ Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, a highly experienced nanny who has been with the family since 2014, to assist with their busy schedules. However, one unique guideline sets their parenting approach apart: the term “kid” is strictly prohibited in their home.
Maria, originally from Palencia, Spain, is instructed not to use the word “kid” when addressing or referring to the young royals, as it is considered disrespectful.
Parenting expert Louise Heren, who conducted research for a documentary at Norland College, explained that the rule reflects Kate and William’s dedication to treating their children with respect. “The word ‘kid’ is banned as a mark of respect for the children as individuals,” she shared.
Despite their prominence, the Wales children enjoy a relatively normal and private life, far removed from the pressures of their royal titles, thanks to their parents’ intentional and thoughtful approach to parenting.
