Monarch prioritises eco-friendly upgrades while Prince Harry opts out of Palace stay
As Prince Harry prepares for his first UK visit of 2025, King Charles is initiating a significant eco-friendly upgrade at Buckingham Palace. The monarch, known for his environmental advocacy, has ordered the replacement of 71 gas-powered lanterns in the Palace’s courtyards with energy-efficient LED bulbs.
The new lighting, planned for the Forecourt and Ambassador’s Court, aligns with the UK Government’s environmental goals, according to The Sun. However, the project is expected to involve a lengthy approval process, requiring input from Historic England, the Metropolitan Police, the Gardens Trust, the Royal Parks, and the National Amenity Societies before moving forward.
An insider joked about the complexity of the task, saying, “How many officials does it take to change a royal lightbulb? Far too many, it seems!” Final decisions on the project are anticipated after the end of January.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry, returning to the UK for his ongoing legal battle against British tabloids, has reportedly declined an offer from King Charles to stay at the Palace. Sources suggest the Duke of Sussex’s decision is intended as a “protest,” further highlighting his strained relationship with the royal family.
Harry’s visit comes nearly a year after his brief 30-minute meeting with King Charles following the monarch’s cancer diagnosis, marking another chapter in their complex family dynamics. While the Palace’s green initiatives move forward, the Duke’s independent arrangements underline the evolving nature of his ties to the royal institution.
