The Duchess of Sussex praises Harry’s decision after landmark settlement with UK publisher
Prince Harry’s recent decision to settle his legal case against News Group Newspapers (NGN) has earned him high praise from Meghan Markle, who is reportedly delighted by his choice to save millions while securing a major victory.
A source close to the couple shared, “Meghan is thrilled with Harry’s big victory, secured by his legal team in the UK. The Duchess is celebrating his smart move, which avoided a massive financial risk.”
Initially reluctant to settle, Harry’s stance reportedly changed after the media group issued an unequivocal apology, which he described as a “monumental victory.” The Duke’s decision not only secured significant damages—reportedly between £10 and £20 million—but also prevented him from potentially incurring millions in legal costs if the trial had proceeded.
Under UK law, claimants who refuse settlement offers and receive less in damages during a trial are required to pay both sides’ legal fees, regardless of the outcome. By settling, Harry avoided this financial gamble while achieving what he called a vindication for other victims of media misconduct.
Harry and former Labour Deputy Leader Tom Watson, who were both represented by barrister David Sherborne, issued a joint statement describing the apologies from NGN as “a vindication for the hundreds of other claimants who were strong-armed into settling without getting to the truth.”
Royal expert Chris Ship noted that while Harry’s settlement was substantial, “this was not about the money for him. He wanted The Sun to admit unlawful activity.”
Meghan’s support highlights her pride in Harry’s decision, which not only brought accountability from NGN but also spared the couple from unnecessary financial risks. Their focus now shifts to celebrating this significant milestone together.
