Meghan Markle Declined Late Queen’s Offer of Sophie’s Mentorship

Duchess of Edinburgh reflects on her royal journey as she marks her 60th birthday

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, widely regarded as a steadfast figure within the Royal Family, was once suggested by the late Queen Elizabeth II to mentor Meghan Markle as she transitioned into royal life.

Sophie, the wife of Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest son, has been celebrated for her calm demeanour and graceful handling of public duties. However, her adjustment to royal life was not without challenges. Reflecting on her journey, Sophie admitted it "took her a while to find her feet" after leaving her public relations career to become a full-time royal.

When Meghan became engaged to Prince Harry, the late Queen believed Sophie could offer invaluable guidance. According to royal biographer Gyles Brandreth in Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, the Queen suggested Sophie as a mentor, saying, “Sophie can help show you the ropes.”

However, Meghan reportedly declined the offer, opting to rely on Harry instead. Sophie later acknowledged the unique pressures Meghan and Harry faced, noting in an interview, “I had five years to adjust to royal life. During our six-month engagement, I was even staying at Buckingham Palace. But not everyone’s journey unfolds the same way.”

Despite the initial distance, Sophie extended her support to the Sussexes, visiting them at Frogmore Cottage in 2019 shortly after the birth of their son, Archie. Her warmth and compassion underscored her dedication to fostering unity within the family.

As Sophie celebrates her 60th birthday, her evolution into one of the monarchy’s most trusted and reliable members is a testament to her resilience, making her a quiet but influential force within the Royal Family.
