Harry’s remarks downplay speculation amid online frenzy
Meghan Markle has reignited speculation about her relationship with Harry after her Instagram handle adopted a style historically associated with divorced royals.
The Duchess of Sussex returned to social media on New Year’s Day, sharing her first solo post since shutting down her personal account in 2018. While her return was celebrated by many, royal commentators were quick to point out her styling as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex” instead of the traditional “Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex,” sparking a debate about its implications.
The former Suits star’s choice of title is significant within royal conventions. Historically, the style used mirrors those of divorced royal wives such as Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson. Although the change could be accidental, it has drawn renewed attention amid ongoing rumours of professional and personal separations between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
This isn’t the first time the title has caused controversy. In 2020, Buckingham Palace faced scrutiny when a similar styling error appeared in an official statement. At the time, royal commentator Alastair Bruce noted, “The style adopted inadvertently sends the wrong message, as it is typically used to indicate divorce.”
Amid the speculation, Harry recently dismissed divorce rumours during an interview with The New York Times. Responding humorously, he said, “Apparently, we’ve moved house or divorced maybe 10 or 12 times as well. I feel sorry for the trolls whose hopes keep building and then crashing.”
While Meghan’s social media return has sparked fresh debate, Harry’s light-hearted remarks suggest the couple remains unfazed by the rumours.
