Duchess of Sussex faced criticism for breaking royal protocol ahead of announcement
Meghan Markle reportedly ruffled feathers within the royal family by giving a Vanity Fair interview before her engagement to Prince Harry was officially announced.
The feature, titled “She’s Just Wild About Harry!”, was published two months prior to the couple’s engagement and is said to have caused concern among senior royals for breaking established protocol. Traditionally, engagement interviews are organised by the Palace and conducted under strict guidelines after official announcements.
According to sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the interview had Kensington Palace’s approval. However, royal insiders revealed that the article felt “like a punch to the solar plexus,” drawing comparisons to the more traditional approaches of Princess Diana and Kate Middleton, who waited until after their engagements were confirmed to speak publicly.
“We do not expect friends of members of the Royal Family to give such interviews,” a royal source told The Mail. The insider added, “While people were pleased that Harry had found a serious girlfriend, the article did set alarm bells ringing.”
The interview, in which Meghan openly discussed her relationship with Harry, led to speculation about her motives. “It made people worry that Miss Markle was seeking to use the relationship for publicity purposes,” the source continued.
In the feature, Meghan shared her feelings about their romance, stating, “We’re in love. This [time] is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
The unconventional move sparked a mix of admiration and criticism, marking an early indication of Meghan’s departure from traditional royal norms.
