Critics Slam Duchess of Sussex’s Solo Account as a Hypocritical Publicity Move
Meghan Markle’s highly anticipated return to Instagram has faced backlash, with critics labelling her solo account a “ridiculous money-making exercise.”
The Duchess of Sussex debuted her new account on New Year’s Day with a beachside video filmed by Prince Harry near their Montecito home. The post, which shows Meghan running barefoot along the shore and tracing "2025" in the sand, has amassed nearly 4 million likes but has also drawn sharp criticism.
Former Royal Correspondent Charles Rae expressed confusion over Meghan’s intentions. Speaking to GB News, he remarked, “I have no idea what she’s up to now. Honestly, we might as well have had the Jaws theme playing as she ran to the water!”
Rae also highlighted the perceived inconsistency of the Sussexes’ return to social media. “They left platforms citing unparalleled abuse, and Harry has been vocal in criticizing Meta, which owns Instagram. This comeback feels baffling and hypocritical.”
While some fans praised Meghan’s post for its charm and simplicity, others saw it as a calculated move to remain in the spotlight. Rae dismissed the hype, saying, “If this is the sensational comeback we’ve been hearing about, I won’t be losing sleep refreshing my feed.”
Critics have also questioned whether the Duchess’s return is driven by commercial aspirations, given the couple’s previous ventures into media and publishing. However, the attention Meghan’s Instagram has garnered suggests she remains a polarising figure in the public eye.
Whether a strategic move or a simple New Year’s gesture, Meghan’s Instagram return has once again placed her at the centre of public and media scrutiny.
