Sussexes reportedly prepare for challenges as Trump begins new term
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who have built a new life in Montecito, California, are reportedly uneasy as Donald Trump begins his term as the 47th president of the United States. The former president’s inauguration on Monday, following a tense election against Kamala Harris, has sparked speculation about the potential challenges the Sussexes may face during his tenure.
Royal commentator Tom Bower suggests the couple might be bracing for turbulent times, calling it “a day of fear.” According to Bower, Trump has previously stated that he wouldn’t “protect” Harry if he returned to power.
Bower noted Trump’s earlier criticism of Harry, accusing the Duke of Sussex of “betraying the Queen,” an act Trump labeled as “unforgivable” and “very disrespectful.” Trump also suggested that Harry’s departure from royal duties had “broken the Queen’s heart.”
Adding to the Sussexes’ potential concerns, Bower highlighted a claim Trump made during an interview with Nigel Farage. The former president suggested that if Harry misrepresented his past drug use on his U.S. visa application, it could lead to his deportation.
The controversy over Harry’s visa application was fueled by efforts from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, to make the documents public. However, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols ruled in September 2024 that Harry’s visa application would remain confidential.
The Sussexes, who have previously expressed political views seen as supportive of Democratic candidates, now face speculation about how Trump’s presidency might impact their lives. As the couple navigates public scrutiny and political tensions, questions linger about whether the next four years could bring fresh challenges for their high-profile lifestyle in the U.S.
