Neighbours Sign Petition Against SpaceX Rocket Launch Noise
Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly considering leaving their £12 million Montecito mansion due to persistent noise pollution caused by Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket launches. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who relocated to the exclusive community in 2020, are said to be exploring a move to prioritise their mental health and peace of mind.
The couple’s once-tranquil neighbourhood has been disrupted by sonic booms from SpaceX launches, prompting over 1,300 locals to sign a petition opposing the company’s plan to increase rocket launches from 36 to 50 annually.
“The booms from rocket launches disrupt sleep patterns, elevate stress levels, and erode the overall quality of life for residents living near launch sites,” the petition states. It also highlights concerns about the impact on sensitive wildlife.
SpaceX operates out of Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB), located 60 miles from Montecito. The company expanded its operations in 2023 by leasing a second launchpad, which is expected to be used for Falcon 9 rocket launches later this year.
Residents have expressed their frustration on social media, with one local writing, “Enough! Let’s stop the disruptive, arrogant sonic booms at night. This insane frequency and quantity need regulation.” Another added, “The sporadic, frequent booms completely disrupt our peace of mind. Everyone in the house, including pets, reacts with anxiety and fear every time.”
If the noise issues persist, Harry and Meghan may join other residents considering leaving the area as the community faces growing disruptions from SpaceX’s increasing operations.
