Locals express frustration over rising traffic, housing prices, and overcrowded spaces.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced backlash from their Montecito neighbours, with some residents blaming the couple for changes disrupting the previously tranquil California enclave.
Since purchasing their $14.65 million (£12 million) mansion in 2020 after stepping back from royal duties, the Sussexes have seen their property’s value skyrocket to $29 million (£23.5 million). While Montecito has long been home to celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow, residents claim the Sussexes have amplified the community's transformation into a bustling tourist destination.
Complaints include overcrowded hiking trails, packed restaurants, and rising housing prices, with some locals alleging that visitors flock to the area hoping to catch a glimpse of the high-profile couple.
An anonymous resident told Vanity Fair that Meghan’s public-facing ventures, such as her American Riviera Orchard brand, have added a “commercialised vibe” to the community. “They moved to escape press scrutiny, yet they continuously court media attention in the U.S.,” celebrity commentator Elaine Lui added.
Critics argue that the Sussexes' projects conflict with their stated desire for a quiet and private life, leaving the neighbourhood divided. While some welcome the prestige the couple brings, others lament the disruption to Montecito’s serene and close-knit atmosphere.
