Prince Harry’s Security Decisions Spark Debate Ahead of UK Visit

Duke of Sussex opts for private lodging as Meghan Markle stays in the US with their children

Prince Harry’s upcoming visit to the UK for his High Court trial has stirred controversy surrounding his accommodation and security arrangements. The Duke of Sussex is set to travel alone, leaving Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, at their California home.

The trip comes as Harry continues his legal case against News Group Newspapers, with proceedings set to begin on Tuesday. Despite losing a previous bid for taxpayer-funded police protection during UK visits, Harry will receive limited police security while in the country.

Reports that Harry declined an offer to stay at Buckingham Palace, which would have provided a secure base, have raised eyebrows. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond criticised the decision, calling it “unwise.”

Speaking to The Mirror, Bond remarked, “It seems unreasonable to expect police protection around a hotel when he has turned down the offer of secure accommodation.” She added that while Harry may feel frustrated about the level of security provided, the alternative arrangements offered were “perfectly suitable.”

This visit marks another solo trip for Harry, with Meghan last visiting the UK during the late Queen’s funeral in September 2022. Since relinquishing Frogmore Cottage, Harry has no permanent residence in the UK, further complicating his travel plans.

As the Duke of Sussex navigates his ongoing legal battles and strained royal ties, his decisions continue to generate public and media scrutiny.
