Monarch honours Papua New Guinea’s longest-serving politician, Sir Julius Chan
King Charles has issued a heartfelt message following the passing of Sir Julius Chan, a revered political figure in Papua New Guinea.
Buckingham Palace released the monarch’s statement in the early hours of Wednesday after he received the sad news. “My wife and I were profoundly saddened to learn of the loss of Sir Julius Chan,” the King wrote. “He was a dedicated public servant who devoted his life to building Papua New Guinea into the strong, independent nation that it is today. His dedication served as an inspiration to many, and I remember with great fondness meeting Sir Julius many times over his decades of service.”
Expressing his condolences, he continued, “My wife and I send our heartfelt condolences to Sir Julius’s family and to all Papua New Guineans, as his loss is mourned throughout Papua New Guinea.” The message was signed off with “Charles R.”
Sir Julius Chan, affectionately known as “Sir J,” was Papua New Guinea’s longest-serving politician. He was first elected to the country’s pre-independence House of Assembly in 1968 and later became its second Prime Minister. At the time of his passing, he remained a member of the national parliament and governor of New Ireland province. He died last week at the age of 85.
The King’s tribute reflects his deep connection to the Commonwealth and his appreciation for the legacy of leaders like Sir Julius Chan.
