Prince Harry and Meghan Issue First Statement Following Royal Family’s Surprise Announcement

Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrate civil rights leader ahead of major California event

Harry and Meghan Markle have issued a new statement, leaving fans surprised as they seemingly responded to the royal family’s latest move at Buckingham Palace. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their announcement shortly after King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Princess Anne hosted a charity event and revealed plans to reopen the Royal Collection Trust at St James's Palace.

In their statement, released through the Archewell Foundation, the couple congratulated Dr. Alondra Nelson, the recipient of this year's NAACP-Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award. The announcement comes ahead of the NAACP Image Awards, set to take place in California on February 22.

"Each year, the NAACP awards one individual with the NAACP-Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award. This award celebrates leaders who are advancing civil rights in digital spaces and building a better online world," the statement read.

The Sussexes added, "The Archewell Foundation is thrilled to congratulate this year's recipient, Dr. Alondra Nelson, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to AI policy and the advancement of civil rights."

Dr. Nelson, a renowned sociologist and expert in artificial intelligence, has focused her work on addressing social inequality and exposing critical flaws in AI, including its role in spreading election misinformation. Her research has led her to advocate for stronger AI regulations and safeguards.

Previously, Dr. Nelson served as Director of The White House Office of Science & Technology Policy, where she oversaw the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights. In 2023, she was appointed to the UN High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence, helping shape global AI governance.

As part of the award, Dr. Nelson will receive a $100,000 grant to support her ongoing work. She joins previous recipients Dr. Safiya Noble (2022), Nabiha Syed (2023), and Dr. Joy Buolamwini (2024).

The 56th NAACP Image Awards broadcast will air live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, located near the Sussexes' Montecito home. Former Vice President Kamala Harris is also expected to receive the prestigious Chairman's Award during the event.
