Duke and Duchess of Sussex Subtly Affirm Connection to Royal Family Despite Rift
Harry and Meghan Markle have seemingly reaffirmed their royal ties despite stepping down from senior royal duties in 2020.
Meghan, who departed from her senior royal role alongside Harry to pursue an independent life, recently made a subtle yet pointed statement about her royal standing. While the late Queen had ruled that the couple would no longer use their ‘HRH’ titles, Harry and Meghan continue to identify as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
During a recent appearance, Meghan showcased a new signet ring on her right-hand pinky finger, engraved with the couple's royal monogram. The monogram, featuring the cursive letters ‘H’ and ‘M’ topped by a coronet adorned with cross pattées, fleurs-de-lys, and strawberry leaves, was first unveiled in 2018 following their wedding.
According to People Magazine, the ring was a gift from Harry to Meghan for their sixth wedding anniversary, crafted by a private jeweller.
Though the Sussexes are no longer working royals, this gesture indicates that they still consider themselves connected to the British royal family.
Despite this subtle nod to their royal ties, the couple’s relationship with the rest of the royal family remains strained. Apart from Harry’s brief meeting with King Charles last year following the King’s cancer diagnosis, there has been no further contact between the Sussexes and the royals.
