Prince William’s Childhood Career Dream Revealed—And It Wasn’t to Be King

Future Monarch Once Had a Heartfelt Ambition Inspired by Princess Diana

Prince William's life has been carefully mapped out since birth, with the expectation that he would one day succeed his father as King. However, as a child, he once dreamed of pursuing a completely different career—one that was inspired by his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

According to royal biographer Andrew Morton, Diana once shared a touching exchange between her sons about their future aspirations.

"William and Harry were aware of their destiny. On one occasion, the boys were discussing their futures with Diana," Morton recalled. "'When I grow up, I want to be a policeman and look after you, Mummy,' said William. Quick as a flash, Harry replied, with a note of triumph in his voice, 'Oh no, you can't, you've got to be King.'"

Though William ultimately embraced his royal role, his childhood fascination with the police seems to have been passed down to his eldest son. During a reception at Kensington Palace, Police Commissioner Jayne Richardson joked about recruiting new officers, to which William responded: "[George] is obsessed, actually, by the police… cars, toys, everything."

In fact, in a heartwarming moment in 2017, William personally delivered Prince George’s Christmas list to Santa Claus, revealing that the young royal had only one request—a police car.

Meanwhile, Princess Charlotte has reportedly expressed interest in nursing. According to insiders, William and Catherine were filled with pride when their daughter spoke about her admiration for NHS workers.

"She’s obviously just a little kid, but still, William and Kate swelled with pride," a source shared. "She’s such a caring little girl who also knows what she wants, so they wouldn’t be surprised if she takes on nursing as one of her big causes when she’s older."

While William’s early ambition of becoming a police officer may never have been realised, his children’s dreams continue to reflect the family’s strong sense of duty and service.
