Calls grow for monarch to assign key duties to Duchess as he reduces workload
Duchess Sophie has been highlighted as a top contender for more prominent royal duties, following concerns about King Charles’ health and his recent hospital stay.
Often referred to as the monarch’s “secret weapon,” the Duchess of Edinburgh received a strong endorsement from royal commentator Phil Dampier, who suggested she is well-positioned to take on a greater role within the Royal Family.
Speaking to The Sun, Dampier emphasised the importance of the King easing his demanding schedule. “Charles has always worked extremely hard, often late into the night, sometimes even falling asleep at his desk,” he said. “But that lifestyle must now be a thing of the past—it’s crucial he prioritises his health.”
He described the moment as a “golden opportunity” for other working royals. While the Prince of Wales is already heavily involved and Catherine is gradually returning to public life, Dampier pointed to Sophie’s recent successes at home and abroad as proof of her readiness.
“She has performed superbly and become a standout figure,” he remarked. “Sophie deserves the chance to take on more significant royal responsibilities.”
