Pope Francis’s recovery clears way for royal couple’s visit to the Holy See
King Charles and Queen Camilla have received welcome news ahead of their upcoming tour to Italy, as it was confirmed that Pope Francis is recovering well and expected to resume duties just in time for their scheduled visit.
The royal couple will begin their official trip on April 7, 2025, and are set to meet the 88-year-old pontiff during a special audience at the Vatican. Concerns had been raised earlier about the Pope's health following his hospitalisation due to a prolonged battle with double pneumonia.
According to GB News, officials have now confirmed that Pope Francis will return to his residence with a recommended two-month rest period from his medical team, easing worries over whether the historic meeting would take place.
Buckingham Palace recently confirmed the Italy tour, sharing, “The King and Queen will visit the Holy See and the Republic of Italy from 7th to 10th April 2025.”
A palace spokesperson further told Hello! Magazine, “On Tuesday 8th, and clearly subject to Pope Francis’s health, Their Majesties will visit the Holy See to join Pope Francis in celebrating the 2025 Jubilee.”
The Jubilee, traditionally held once every 25 years, is a special year of prayer, reconciliation, and spiritual reflection within the Catholic Church. King Charles and Queen Camilla are also expected to attend a service in the Sistine Chapel focused on environmental care—highlighting the shared commitment of both the King and Pope to protecting nature.
The update brings a sense of reassurance and optimism to the royal tour, which will mark an important spiritual and diplomatic moment in the King’s reign.
