Controversial Architect Among Finalists for National Tribute to Elizabeth II
King Charles III has been dealt an unexpected setback following the unveiling of the shortlist for a national memorial dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Among the finalists is Norman Foster, a renowned architect who has previously been critical of the King. Foster, known for designing London’s Gherkin, was one of several architects who publicly condemned Charles—then Prince of Wales—over his alleged interference in planning decisions, particularly regarding the redevelopment of Chelsea Barracks.
The King has had no involvement in the selection process, which has drawn a wide range of creative talent from both the UK and abroad. The shortlisted teams have been tasked with designing a masterplan that celebrates Elizabeth II’s “extraordinary life of service” while providing a space for reflection.
Despite Foster’s inclusion, reports suggest the King is determined not to let past tensions influence the project, remaining focused on honouring his late mother with a fitting tribute.
