Princess Beatrice Opens Up About Early Birth and Sarah Ferguson’s Cancer Battle

Royal begins new mission to raise awareness around women’s health after welcoming baby Athena

Princess Beatrice has shared a deeply personal reflection on the early arrival of her second daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose, while also paying tribute to her mother Sarah Ferguson’s ongoing battle with cancer.

In a heartfelt piece for Vogue Magazine, the Princess of York opened up for the first time about the challenges she faced during her pregnancy and premature delivery. Describing the experience as both emotional and overwhelming, Beatrice revealed her desire to turn her experience into a force for change.

“Preterm birth affects so many families, leaving them faced with the very same challenges I found myself confronting,” she wrote, highlighting the emotional toll and uncertainty many parents face.

Amid her own health concerns, Beatrice also reflected on her mother’s recent diagnoses of breast and skin cancer, which she says has deeply influenced her new perspective on women’s health. “Maybe it’s to do with getting a little older, and hopefully a little wiser – or maybe it’s something to do with my mother’s breast and skin cancer diagnosis last year – but for me, nothing feels more vital than facilitating the necessary research into the health challenges that women face daily,” she shared.

Now a mother of two, Beatrice revealed she has teamed up with one of her oldest friends, Alice Naylor-Leyland, to launch a new project aimed at raising awareness and supporting vital women’s health research.

Throughout the article, Beatrice described how open conversations with family, friends, and fellow mums became a source of strength during her most vulnerable moments. Her new initiative marks the beginning of a meaningful journey—one shaped by personal experience, compassion, and a deep commitment to improving the lives of women and mothers everywhere.
