Royal author claims Camilla was reluctant to become queen but agreed out of love for Charles
Queen Camilla reportedly made a major personal sacrifice in accepting her role beside King Charles, according to royal insiders and author Tom Quinn, who revealed new details about the Queen’s true feelings toward royal life.
Camilla, who married Charles in April 2005 following years of public controversy surrounding their relationship, is said to have been deeply reluctant to take on the position of Queen Consort—despite her husband’s insistence. Their relationship, once marred by scandal during Charles’s marriage to Princess Diana, eventually became official after the couple weathered decades of public and royal scrutiny.
According to Quinn, Camilla never truly wanted to step into the spotlight. “Camilla definitely didn’t want to be queen because she’s intelligent enough to know that once you become queen, or a senior member of the royal family, you are constantly under the microscope,” he told Fox News Digital.
He added that even in the early days of their relationship in the 1970s, Camilla preferred a quieter life and was hesitant about marrying into the monarchy—not because she didn’t love Charles, but because she feared the pressure and public exposure that would follow.
“She enjoyed having a private life away from the limelight,” Quinn said, noting that the idea of becoming queen was overwhelming to her.
A former royal staffer reportedly echoed this sentiment, claiming Camilla once used blunt language when speaking to Charles about her discomfort with royal protocol. “Can’t we get away from all this protocol? It’s all bollocks,” she reportedly said. Charles, known for disliking swearing, is said to have replied, “You’re going to do it for me, darling.”
Despite her reservations, Camilla has since stepped into her role as Queen Consort following the couple’s accession to the throne in September 2022. Her commitment is now being seen as a quiet act of loyalty—one that underscores her enduring support for the King during a pivotal time in his reign.
