Security Concerns Play a Key Role in Seatbelt Decisions
Members of the British royal family, including King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Catherine, and Princess Anne, have often been seen travelling without seatbelts. Even the late Queen Elizabeth, known for her careful driving, was frequently spotted behind the wheel on the Windsor estate without one.
While the Prince and Princess of Wales ensure their children are always securely fastened, they themselves sometimes forgo seatbelts during high-profile events.
Security expert Michael Chandler explains that contrary to public perception, royals do wear seatbelts regularly, particularly on long journeys or at high speeds. However, in certain situations, skipping them is a deliberate choice based on security risks.
‘In cases where a high-profile figure faces potential threats, the ability to exit a vehicle quickly becomes a priority,’ Chandler told the Daily Mail. He added that in emergencies, seatbelts could hinder a swift escape, making them a liability rather than a safety feature.
Ultimately, while the royals adhere to road safety guidelines in most instances, their occasional decision to forgo seatbelts is a calculated move, balancing security and practicality.
