Monarch highlights deep UK-Italy ties ahead of first overseas visit since cancer setback
Buckingham Palace has released an official update as King Charles and Queen Camilla depart for their much-anticipated state visit to Italy — the monarch's first international tour since his recent hospitalisation.
In a statement reflecting on the historic bond between the two nations, the Palace revealed that the King and Queen will visit Rome and Ravenna during the four-day tour. “His Majesty has visited Italy 17 times before, whilst Her Majesty has visited twice. Although this is the first time they will visit as King and Queen,” the statement noted.
The royal household also paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who visited Italy five times during her reign, often accompanied by Prince Philip, further emphasising the long-standing friendship between the UK and Italy.
A Palace spokesperson highlighted the significance of the tour, stating that it will “underscore the depth and breadth of that bilateral relationship, and the links between our peoples.”
Ahead of the visit, King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted a celebration of Italian food and fashion at Highgrove, where the monarch delivered a heartfelt keynote speech. “Our two nations share so many ties, between our people; between our culture; a deep friendship rooted in shared values, mutual affection, and mutual respect,” the King said.
This trip marks a symbolic moment for the King, following a brief hospital stay earlier this year related to his cancer treatment. His participation in the state visit signals his return to international duties and underscores his commitment to strengthening diplomatic and cultural ties abroad.
