Buckingham Palace Prepares Key Role for Prince William After Pope’s Passing

Heir to the throne expected to represent King Charles at upcoming Vatican funeral

Following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, Buckingham Palace is reportedly preparing for a major announcement involving Prince William, as royal plans begin to take shape ahead of the late pontiff’s funeral.

King Charles, who met Pope Francis during a recent state visit to Italy with Queen Camilla, issued a heartfelt message of condolence, saying he was “deeply saddened” by the news but “greatly moved” to have seen the Pope earlier this month.

As the Vatican arranges official rites ahead of the conclave to elect a new Pope, the Palace is closely monitoring developments. Royal Editor Rebecca English has revealed that Buckingham Palace is expected to make an official statement soon, particularly regarding funeral attendance.

“Officials are waiting to learn of the Pope’s funeral intentions and whether Heads of State or their representatives—most likely Prince William—will be invited to attend and pay their respects,” English noted.

If confirmed, the Prince of Wales is expected to represent the British monarchy at the Vatican, marking a significant moment for the heir apparent on the world stage.

The Queen and I remember with particular affection our meetings with His Holiness over the years,” King Charles wrote in his message. “We were greatly moved to have been able to visit him earlier in the month.”

The potential presence of Prince William at the funeral would underline his growing role within the monarchy, particularly during moments of international significance.
