Monarch expected to echo 2005 decision made for Pope John Paul II’s funeral
King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to alter their royal schedule following the death of Pope Francis, in a gesture reminiscent of the King’s decision nearly two decades ago to honour Pope John Paul II.
The Vatican confirmed on Monday—just a day after Easter—that Pope Francis had died after suffering a stroke and heart failure. Buckingham Palace responded swiftly, releasing a heartfelt message from the King expressing his “deep sadness.”
In a further mark of respect, flags across all royal residences were ordered to be flown at half-mast.
As funeral arrangements proceed in the Vatican, sources revealed to the Daily Mail that King Charles will cancel several upcoming engagements to mourn the late pontiff. He is also reportedly considering attending the funeral—just as he postponed his 2005 wedding to Camilla to be present at the funeral of Pope John Paul II.
However, with the King undergoing cancer treatment, Royal Editor Rebecca English suggests Prince William may attend the funeral on his behalf, representing the Crown at the high-profile event.
Buckingham Palace has yet to confirm the finalised plans.
