King Charles Assigns Duchess Sophie Important Role During His Absence

Buckingham Palace confirms Duchess of Edinburgh to lead Anzac Day events

Duchess Sophie is taking on a prominent role in King Charles’ absence, as Buckingham Palace announces she will represent the Royal Family at the Anzac Day commemorations in London on April 25.

The Duchess of Edinburgh, 60, will be the sole royal in attendance at the events hosted by the Australian and New Zealand High Commissions. Her day will include participation in three significant ceremonies: the Dawn Service at Hyde Park Corner, a wreath-laying at the Cenotaph on behalf of the King, and a Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey.

This latest assignment follows her recent royal duty at the Sovereign’s Parade at Sandhurst on April 11, where she inspected troops in place of the King. It was her third appearance at the prestigious event, previously attending in 2013 and 2019.

With King Charles and Queen Camilla recently returning from a state visit to Italy, Sophie has been stepping up to maintain royal presence — a move seen as a sign of trust in her growing role within the monarchy.
