Palace Shares Rare Photo and Expresses Gratitude for Private Audience on Royal Anniversary
King Charles has shared a touching message with Pope Francis following an emotional private meeting at the Vatican, marking a deeply meaningful moment during the royal couple’s visit to Italy.
On Thursday, the King’s office released a rare photograph and a message on behalf of Their Majesties, expressing their gratitude after being invited for a surprise audience with the ailing pontiff. The meeting, which had initially been cancelled due to the Pope’s health, was held on Wednesday and lasted around 20 minutes.
“Che occasione speciale!” the Palace wrote in Italian, meaning, “What a special occasion!” The message continued in English: “A special moment for Their Majesties as they privately met His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican yesterday. The King and Queen were deeply touched by The Pope’s kind remarks about their 20th wedding anniversary and honoured to be able to share their best wishes to him in person.”
The Vatican also released a statement confirming that the Pope offered his best wishes to the King and Queen as they celebrated their milestone anniversary.
Originally scheduled as part of the official itinerary, the Vatican stop was cancelled following doctors’ advice for the Pope to rest after a 38-day hospital stay for several health complications, including pneumonia. Despite the earlier uncertainty, the meeting ultimately took place, leaving a lasting impression on both parties.
