Critics question use of city resources during New York outing by former royal
Meghan Markle has drawn criticism after attending a Broadway performance in New York with what many have described as an unusually large security presence.
The Duchess of Sussex arrived at a Thursday night showing of Gypsy accompanied by a convoy of three SUVs and an unmarked vehicle reportedly associated with the NYPD. The 43-year-old, now living in California with the Duke of Sussex and their children, is said to have hired former Secret Service agents to bolster her private security detail.
The presence of two intelligence officers in the unmarked police vehicle has sparked concerns over the possible use of public resources for a private citizen. Several paparazzi reportedly told Page Six that the level of protection was excessive, calling it far beyond what is typical for celebrity appearances.
A source described the security as “unprecedented and unnecessary,” questioning whether New York City personnel were involved in safeguarding the former royal.
Since stepping down from royal duties in 2020, Meghan has focused on media projects, including producing content for Netflix alongside her husband.
