Richard Kay believes Diana would have welcomed Meghan and backed her decision to step away from royal life
Meghan Markle has received a symbolic endorsement from Richard Kay, a longtime royal commentator and close friend of the late Princess Diana, who believes the Princess of Wales would have supported Meghan and Harry’s decision to step back from royal duties.
Speaking on the Royal Confidential podcast, Kay reflected on how Diana might have reacted to what’s widely known as “Megxit.” He suggested Diana would have found Meghan’s independence refreshing and would have appreciated her influence in helping Prince Harry choose a new path.
“None of us really know, but I think there is something about Meghan that Diana would have found not just intriguing but slightly liberating,” Kay explained. “I think she would have liked Meghan's independence and the fact that she was able to offer Harry an escape route from royal duty.”
However, Kay also acknowledged that Diana would likely have been troubled by the ongoing rift between her sons. “She wouldn't have admired, however, the rift with William,” he said, adding, “I think she would have been very disappointed by how things panned out.”
Despite the family tensions, Kay believes Diana would have been welcoming to Meghan from the beginning, recognising her strength and individuality.
Prince Harry and Meghan officially stepped down from their senior royal roles in 2020. They now reside in Montecito, California, with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
