Prince Andrew’s Duke of York Title Faces Fresh Threat Amid Public and Political Pressure

King Charles urged to act as criticism intensifies over disgraced royal’s lingering role

Prince Andrew is once again under intense scrutiny as pressure builds on King Charles to strip him of his remaining royal title—the Duke of York—amid rising public frustration and renewed criticism over his continued presence in royal circles.

The 65-year-old royal, who was stripped of his military roles and patronages in 2019 following the fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, is now facing calls from the people of York to be formally removed from the dukedom. A recent GB News poll revealed that over 70 percent of locals believe Andrew no longer deserves the honour.

“We shouldn’t be celebrating him in York in any shape or form,” one resident said. Another added, “He taints the Royal Family and the city.”

The backlash comes on the heels of another controversy involving Andrew—a Chinese spy scandal that raised national security concerns late last year. Meanwhile, his prolonged dispute with King Charles over Royal Lodge has further soured public perception. Despite the King cutting off financial support, Andrew has refused to vacate the 30-room Windsor property, insisting on funding its maintenance and security himself.

Now, with the future of both his residence and title hanging in the balance, calls for action have reached Buckingham Palace. Critics argue that the Duke of York title, historically granted to the monarch’s second son since 1385, no longer holds relevance in a modern monarchy—especially when associated with a figure as controversial as Andrew.

“The Duke of York has never lived in York,” one passerby remarked. “If there’s going to be a Duke, he should be from York and live in York.”

Royal author Gareth Russell recently confirmed that King Charles still wishes to remove Andrew from Royal Lodge, though a Palace spokesperson has stated there are “no plans” at this time to revoke his title.

As public sentiment hardens and pressure mounts, many now question how long the monarch can delay making a final decision on his brother’s remaining royal identity.
