Duke describes tense tea-time clash that widened royal family divide
In his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex opens up about the ongoing strain between Meghan Markle and Catherine, describing a difficult relationship shaped by clashing personalities and early misunderstandings.
Harry recalls that the two women failed to connect from the start. Tensions reportedly surfaced during wedding preparations, including a disagreement over bridesmaid dresses that left Meghan in tears, and a frosty moment when Catherine grimaced after being asked to share her lip gloss.
Following their honeymoon, the Sussexes met with William and Catherine for what Harry describes as a tense sit-down over tea. During the meeting, Catherine allegedly gripped the leather sofa so tightly her fingers turned white while demanding an apology from Meghan for a comment about her experiencing “baby brain” during pregnancy.
Meghan insisted she meant no offence, explaining, “It’s how I speak to my friends.” But the conversation turned hostile when William pointed a finger and told her, “Well, it’s rude, Meghan. These things are not done here.” Meghan responded sharply: “If you do not mind, keep your finger out of my face.”
Harry marks the exchange as a pivotal moment that deepened the rift between the couples. Since stepping down as working royals in 2020, he and Meghan have settled in California with their two children.
