Sir Elton John Suggests Palace Played Role in Rift with Princess Diana

Music icon reflects on brief fallout and lasting bond with Diana’s sons

Princess Diana’s warm friendship with Sir Elton John was one of the most iconic royal-celebrity connections of the 20th century. But according to the legendary musician, their relationship wasn’t without complications—some of which he believes were influenced by the Palace.

Their bond began in 1981 when Elton John performed at Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday at Windsor Castle. The event marked the start of a close friendship between the Princess of Wales and the singer, one that lasted for years and was filled with mutual admiration.

However, the friendship briefly soured just a year before Diana’s tragic death in a car crash in Paris at age 36. The falling out was reportedly sparked by Diana's sudden decision to pull out of a charity project that was deeply personal to Elton.

Speaking on Larry King Live on CNN, the musician revealed he was hurt by her withdrawal and hinted at royal influence behind the decision. “It was one of her charity things that he had organised, and she pulled out of it,” he said, suggesting pressure from the Palace may have been a factor.

Despite their brief estrangement, Diana’s untimely death left a profound impact on Elton John. He famously paid tribute at her funeral by performing a reworked version of “Candle in the Wind,” in what became one of the most memorable and emotional moments in royal history.

In the years since, Elton has remained close to Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, continuing the connection he once shared with their mother and honoring her legacy through ongoing support and friendship.
