An Australian court has rejected an appeal by Indigenous elder and activist Uncle Robbie Thorpe, who sought legal action against King Charles III over allegations of genocide against Aboriginal people.
Three judges at Victoria’s Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal. This marks the third setback in Thorpe’s legal campaign, which began in 2023 when he tried to bring a private prosecution at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
According to GB News, Thorpe, 68, claims the King and Australian government institutions share responsibility for systems that continue to disadvantage First Nations people.
Thorpe is a member of the Krautatungalung people from south-eastern Australia. The title “Uncle” is used as a sign of respect for elders in Indigenous Australian communities.
He said he does not believe he can receive a fair hearing in Australia.
His allegations focus on the social and economic hardships faced by Indigenous Australians, who make up roughly four per cent of the country’s population.
